I have read about and heard so many ways that people get to sleep.....fans running, tv on with timer, dark room, light in room, door closed, door open, melatonin and on and on.
I use this little gadget..................It is a sound machine that has several different sounds you can use. Ocean, thunder, summer nights, rain, brook and 'white' sounds, whatever that is! I use the rain sounds most of the time. It also has a timer for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. I much prefer listening to the 'rain' than to hear the house sounds. I think all houses have their 'sounds'. One that we have that really keeps me awake, is the refrigerator. It is brand new and yet I hear pops and sounds coming from it all hours of the night. I am a light sleeper and when I found the sound machine, it has really made a difference. I hear the rain instead of the fridge!
