CHRISTMAS MEMORIES!

Background:  My parents divorced when I was 3 years old and we had been living in Abilene, Texas. My Mother and I came back to Tennessee and lived with my Grandmother, two Aunts, and an Uncle.  A full house, but I was the only child!

My Grandmother was from Ohio and she didn't make southern dishes very often. One thing I do remember her making at holiday time, was boiled custard.  It was similar to eggnog, but not thick.  She cooked it, left it in the big pans and she kept it outside on a screened porch on top of a chest freezer.  I was only told to get my cup from a certain pan.  Hmmm, wonder what the other one had in it? (hehehe)
She also made a fruit cake, but to this day I can't tell you what was in it.  It was very, very dark, and heavy.  I didn't care much for it, but I do remember her making it, and cutting up 'stuff'for it.
For Christmas dinner, we always had a turkey or chicken and dressing of course.  Her dressing was made with left-over biscuits as the base.  She made tiny little biscuits and they were hard as rocks!  I didn't know anything about big, soft biscuits until I got married and my Mother In Law made the best ever.  Needless to say, I didn't care too much for her dressing either, but the rest of the family did.

So, not caring for these things too much, how did I get so 'plump'?  lol

  6. Hmmm, I don't think I'd care much for those choices either. My grandmother always had fruitcake on hand...she didn't make it, I don't know where she got it but it was awful.
